How to Choose a Laptop For Ableton Live

The first thing you should do is determine what size and kind of laptop you need. If you want to record, mix, and master your tracks using Ableton Live software, then a larger laptop with a good processor is essential to ensure that you won’t have any problems with latency or lagging when recording multiple audio tracks simultaneously. It’s also important that your new computer has enough RAM so that all those processes run smoothly.

If you’re just getting started in creating music on the go and don’t need anything fancy like multiple processors or dedicated video cards for rendering visual effects in real time (which is what Ableton Live does), then choose something smaller like an Ultrabook or similar compact model from Acer, ASUS or Toshiba.

2.2020 Apple MacBook Air Laptop

BrandApple
Model NameMacBook Air
Screen Size13.3 Inches
ColorSpace Gray
Hard Disk Size256 GB
CPU ModelUnknown
Ram Memory Installed Size8 GB
Operating SystemMac OS
Graphics Card DescriptionIntegrated
CPU Speed3.1 GHz

The MacBook Air 2020 is a more modest upgrade over the previous model with only some minor tweaks. This also means that it’s an incredibly small laptop, weighing only 2.8 pounds and measuring 11.97 x 8.36 x 0.61 inches (30.41 x 21.24 x 1.56cm; W x D x H). While there are still bezels framing the screen, they are definitely narrower than before so that Apple could shrink down the size of the laptop even further while keeping the same 13-inch display in place.

As for its components, it’s packing in a dual-core 8th-generation Intel Core i5 CPU that’s clocked at 1.1GHz to 3.5GHz with Turbo Boost support as well as Intel UHD Graphics 617 GPU and 8GB of RAM (this can be configured up to 16GB if you pay extra). Storage options start at 256GB but can be configured up to 2TB for those willing to pay for it (the base model is $999 / £999 / AU$1,599), which is double what was offered previously on this model.

MacBook Air

The 2020 MacBook Air is the best laptop you can buy, thanks to its lightweight design, beautiful display and all-day battery life. The keyboard has been redesigned to be quieter and more responsive; it’s a pleasure to type on. The trackpad is still one of the best you’ll find on any laptop.

For $999, you get a very good computer with a 1.1 GHz Intel Core i3 processor, 8GB of RAM and 256GB SSD storage — that’s twice as much storage as the base model last year — along with two Thunderbolt 3 ports, which are useful for connecting to external displays. You can optionally upgrade it to a 10th Gen Intel Core i5 or i7 processor with 16GB of RAM and up to 2TB of storage.

Processor: Dual-core 8th-generation Intel Core i5

The processor is a core component of the MacBook Air. It’s responsible for executing all the instructions your computer receives. The faster the processor, the more quickly it can run through those instructions and generate an output (such as a web page or video file). Apps that need to calculate complex equations or cope with large quantities of data require an especially fast processor.

If you’re using programs that demand high-end processing power, you’ll be able to get more done on this laptop than you would on a less capable machine. However, if you’re not attempting difficult tasks, there’s no point in spending extra money on a super-powered system. In situations where your processing demands are low, the additional computing power won’t get used and will simply drain your laptop’s battery life.

Graphics: Intel UHD Graphics 617

The Intel UHD Graphics 617 is a low-end processor for laptops based on the Kaby-Lake Refresh architecture (8th generation. It’s part of the ultra low voltage U-series and therefore dual-core model clocked at 1.1 – 3.0 GHz that lacks Turbo Boost technology. The chip integrates Intel HD Graphics 617 clocked at 300 – 1000 MHz without eDRAM cache and is manufactured in 14nm+.

Compared with older graphics cards of the same type, it has a higher clock speed — which means that it can process more data per second — but with worse performance per Watt. The main advantage this card offers over slower models is its much lower power consumption, which means cooler operation and longer battery life while watching videos or surfing the internet.

Graphics card features include video encoding and decoding capabilities like HEVC (4K) @ 60fps, VP8/VP9 8/10bit and H264 10bit hardware decoding support as well as support for HDMI 2.0b up to 4K60 Hz or DisplayPort 1.2a up to 4K60 Hz output via Thunderbolt 3.

RAM: 8GB

• RAM (or random access memory) is what your computer uses to run programs. The more RAM you have, the faster your Mac will run and the more applications you can work on at once. You should be fine if you go with 8GB, which is the default option on this model. With 8GB of RAM, your Mac will be able to handle most tasks without slowing down. If you’re a photo or video-editing hobbyist who works on their laptop a lot and sometimes has several programs open at once, I’d recommend considering 16GB of RAM for extra speed and power.

The Retina display also makes working on multiple apps in Split View easier because each window is clearer and takes up less screen space.

Screen: 13.3-inch 2,560 x 1,600 Retina display (backlit LED, IPS)

  • The Apple MacBook Air Laptop is a great pick for work and entertainment.
  • It features a 13.3-inch 2,560 x 1,600 Retina display (backlit LED, IPS) screen to let you enjoy media content with vivid colors and sharp details.
  • A 10th Gen Intel Core i5 processor provides the power you need to run demanding applications.
  • For more storage space, the laptop comes with 512GB of SSD storage capacity.
  • With 8GB of memory installed, this laptop handles multitasking seamlessly.

Storage: 256GB SSD

Will you find yourself constantly running out of space? Are you planning on using your computer primarily for things like word processing and web browsing, which don’t take up a lot of storage capacity? If the answer is yes to any of these questions, 256GB should be enough.

However, if you plan on keeping most or all of your media files on your laptop—music, photos, videos—256GB might not be enough. This is especially true if you plan on downloading content from the Internet instead of streaming it. And contrary to what some people may tell you, this is a legitimate concern even in 2019: while streaming has become ubiquitous and download speeds have increased across the board in recent years, there are still situations where having more storage space than 256 GB makes sense.

Ports: 2x Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C), headphone jack

Ports: 2 Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports, headphone jacks

The MacBook Air has two Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports, which are the only ports on this laptop. These ports support Thunderbolt up to 4 lanes and can be used for charging and connecting your MacBook to external displays. Each port has a native DisplayPort 1.2 output that supports an external display with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz connected via a single cable. You can also connect up to two external displays at once using these ports with the resolutions mentioned above. The two USB-C connectors also support USB 3.1 Gen 2 (up to 10 Gbps) for connecting peripherals such as hard drives, SSDs, and more.

Connectivity: 802.11ac Wi-Fi; Bluetooth 4.2

  • 11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2

Connect to the Internet over a wireless network using 802.11ac Wi-Fi technology with multiple input and output antennas for up to three times faster performance over the previous generation of Wi-Fi. You can also connect wirelessly via Bluetooth 4.2 technology, which allows you to link with peripherals such as keyboards, mice, and cell phones.

The MacBook Air is a fantastic and fast laptop for the money.

The MacBook Air 2020 is a fantastic and fast laptop for the money, but it has its limitations. The base model of the new MacBook Air is a great laptop for students who need to take notes or do homework. It’s more than fast enough for note-taking and web browsing, and it has good battery life.

It’s a solid laptop for the money, but it does have its limitations. The display is nice, but there’s not a lot of storage. There isn’t an SD card slot, so you’ll have to buy an external SD card reader if you want to put photos on your computer from your camera. There aren’t any USB-C ports or a touch bar either, so if those features are important to you then you might consider getting another laptop instead.

Pros and Cons of 2020 Apple MacBook Air Laptop

Pros:

  • Lightweight and portable. The MacBook Air is one of the lightest laptops you can buy at just 2.8 pounds (1.29kg) for the model with a 13-inch screen, making it easy to carry around all day without getting tired arms.
  • Excellent battery life. Apple says that the new MacBook Air has up to 11 hours of battery life, which means that you don’t need to worry about finding a charger when you’re out and about.
  • Good performance. This mid-range laptop has good performance for normal use, such as browsing the web or writing documents. It’s not going to set any land speed records when it comes to processing speed or graphics, but it’s more than powerful enough for most tasks.* Great keyboard and trackpad: The keyboard is comfortable to type on and has plenty of key travel, meaning that your fingers will rarely bottom out during typing sessions. The trackpad is large and provides excellent accuracy when tracking your finger across it as well as good haptic feedback when clicking down on it.* Cons: Expensive at $999 minimum price point; No SD card slot; Only two USB-C ports

3.Razer Blade 15 Studio Edition Laptop 2020

Screen Size15.6 Inches
ColorSilver
Hard Disk Size1 TB
CPU ModelCore i7
Ram Memory Installed Size32 GB
Operating SystemWindows 10
Card DescriptionDedicated
Graphics CoprocessorNVIDIA Quadro RTX 5000 Studio Edition

The Razer Blade 15 Studio Edition Laptop 2020 is as powerful as ever, with an Intel Core i7-9750H CPU and Nvidia Quadro RTX 5000 GPU packed inside its slim chassis. It’s a very good laptop for creators and gamers alike, though it lacks the new 9th Gen CPUs that some of its competitors have.

The Razer Blade 15 Studio Edition Laptop 2020 is not just meant for content creators; it has also been designed to be able to run graphically demanding games without any issues. The laptop comes with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 graphics card, which ensures that any game you throw at it will run smoothly at high settings. But the main draw of this laptop is its enhanced RAM capacity (32GB) and storage option (1TB SSD).

Its size makes it perfect for traveling, whether you’re going on a business trip or just want to take your work with you on vacation. And while laptops in general are not known for their battery life, this one can last up to 10 hours on a single charge! That means you won’t need to worry about recharging too often when out in public places like airports or coffee shops where outlets might be scarce. With all these features combined into one portable device – The Razer Blade 15 Studio Edition Laptop 2020 will make sure that every second spent with them feels like paradise!

Display

Display

The 15.6-inch 4K OLED touch screen on the Razer Blade Studio Edition offers 100 percent Adobe RGB coverage, 100 percent DCI-P3 color gamut, and HDR 400 support. The display boasts a 300 nits brightness and has a 16:9 aspect ratio with Full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution.

Audio

The 2020 Razer Blade 15 Studio Edition has four speakers that produce loud and rich audio. You can easily watch movies or listen to music on this laptop, thanks to its impressive audio. However, it doesn’t have a dedicated subwoofer, so the sound isn’t as deep as what you’d get from laptops with them.

Keyboard and touchpad

The Razer Blade 15 Studio Edition laptop’s keyboard is very comfortable, and the keys are spaced out to avoid typos. The backlighting on the keyboard can be adjusted to a few different levels of brightness.

The touchpad supports a variety of gestures, including two-finger scrolling (up and down, left and right) and three-finger taps for playing/pausing audio or video files. The touchpad also supports Windows gestures, such as swiping three fingers up to open Task View or swiping four fingers right to open Action Center.

Graphics

This laptop comes with Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Super Max-Q graphics, which is the most powerful discrete graphics card you can get in a laptop. You’ll get 6 GB of GDDR6 VRAM and it’s only available in this one model. With that level of power, you’ll have no problem playing games like Metro Exodus and Far Cry New Dawn at 1080p resolution. The refresh rate is locked at 60Hz, so you won’t be able to enjoy smooth gameplay if you want a high frame rate at 1080p resolution.

If you want to play games on the Razer Blade 15 Studio Edition Laptop 2020, I recommend upgrading the system to 4K resolution with a 144Hz refresh rate for $300 or $400 respectively.

You can choose from two different display options: a 1,840 x 1,080 resolution or 3,840 x 2,160 resolution panel. Both displays use IPS technology with 100% Adobe RGB color gamut coverage and support touch input. The higher-resolution panel also supports HDR10 technology for enhanced picture quality when watching videos or playing games on your laptop.

Gaming and VR

  • Gaming

The Razer Blade 15 Studio Edition is a good laptop for gaming, which has been its primary function. I’ve tested it primarily on older games that don’t require the most sophisticated graphics hardware, but even at 1440p resolution with slight doubling of the frame rate, everything ran smoothly and looked really fantastic. It can also run newer games like Doom Eternal with relative ease. The fan noise isn’t excessive unless you’re running it at full tilt for long periods of time, in which case you should probably plug in headphones to drown out the sound anyway. A few cables are included to get started: a HDMI cable, an ethernet cable, and a power cable. No USB-C to USB-A adapter is included for connecting peripherals via a traditional USB port (as opposed to USB-C).

  • VR

This computer supports VR headsets like Oculus Quest and HTC Vive Pro with ease when connected via the right adapters—and because it runs rather quietly while doing so, I suspect that any heat issues won’t be too much of an issue here either.

Battery life

Battery life is a common concern for those shopping for a new laptop. After all, what’s the point of having an insanely powerful yet portable computer if you can’t take it anywhere without it dying on you? Fortunately, you won’t have to worry about that with the Razer Blade 15 Studio Edition. We found the battery life to be very good—when we used it while traveling, we almost never had to worry about plugging in. Despite being a power hungry machine, it lasted us over 10 hours when playing video games and doing a bit of light web browsing. Moreover—and this is particularly impressive—we were able to work on our online writing course for over six hours without any problems. Overall, we think battery life is sufficiently long enough for most people—gaming enthusiasts excepted.

A powerful and versatile laptop for creatives.

The Razer Blade 15 Studio Edition is a powerful, versatile laptop that’s well-suited for creative work. It has a great display and good battery life, and its keyboard and trackpad are excellent. It does have a few tradeoffs in terms of ports, performance, and price compared with other laptops for video editing, but it’s still one of our top picks.

Pros and Cons of Razer Blade 15 Studio Edition Laptop 2020

# Pros:

  • 4K OLED touchscreen with 100% DCI-P3 and VESA DisplayHDR 400 certified, 15.6 inches

  • 16GB dual channel memory (DDR4, 2667MHz) 512 GB SSD storage

4.2019 Apple MacBook Pro

BrandApple
Model NameMacBook Pro
Screen Size16 Inches
ColorSpace Gray
Hard Disk Size512 GB
CPU ModelIntel Core i7
Ram Memory Installed Size16 GB
Operating SystemMac OS
Graphics Card DescriptionDedicated
Graphics CoprocessorIntel UHD Graphics 630

The MacBook Pro 13-inch with Touch Bar (2019) is a no-compromise device that costs more than most of our readers can afford—but it’s the only way to get an 8th Gen Core processor in a proper Apple laptop.

Overall

In a nutshell, the 2019 MacBook Pro’s hardware improvements are modest but welcome. The low-end model’s CPU is now an 8th generation quad-core processor, and though it’s not the fastest of its kind, it doesn’t have to be: most users will find that this machine is more than fast enough for their web browsing, media consumption and other day-to-day uses. If you need extra power for intensive tasks like video editing or 3D rendering, an optional six-core CPU and/or 32GB of RAM can help ensure that you’ll get optimal performance from your notebook.

The new keyboard design replaces the much maligned butterfly keyboard with a new mechanism called Magic Keyboard. By all accounts it feels similar to previous generations of Apple laptop keyboards; Apple claims it has better travel and a “more satisfying key feel.” It also has a physical Escape key once again, which some users may prefer compared to the Touch Bar’s virtual Escape functionality.

Finally, True Tone technology is making its way to the MacBook Pro after having been available on recent iPad Pros—this feature automatically adjusts your display color temperature based on lighting conditions around you in order to give your eyes better visual comfort while reducing eye strain during prolonged use.

Keyboard and trackpad

While you’re working, you’ll now find that the keyboard is quieter, more responsive, and easier to see. The trackpad is larger, more responsive and recognizes clicks better. You can also click on the pad to make it level with the bottom-right corner instead of being flush with the palm rest on previous models.

Screen and speakers

The screen is a 15.4-inch 2880 x 1800 Retina display with a pixel density of 220 pixels per inch (ppi), which makes it the second-highest resolution available on any MacBook Pro to date. This puts text and icons on par with the last-generation 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display, which came in at 227 ppi, yet offers much more room for your work.

Apple’s high-resolution displays have always looked great without extra calibration, and that’s the case again here. The wide color gamut means you’ll see deeper blues, greens and reds than many other screens can produce, making graphics and photos look vibrant but never oversaturated.

The screen is also brighter than most laptops’, reaching 370 nits of maximum brightness when set to full power (and dipping down to 120 nits at minimum). That’s not as bright as some premium competitors like the LG Gram 14 or Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 (both 400 nits), but it does allow for great visibility even outside on sunny days or under an office’s fluorescent lights.

Performance

  • The 2019 Apple MacBook Pro is powered by an 8th-generation Intel Core processor and comes with 16GB of RAM, which can be configured to 32GB or 64GB.
  • The 2019 Apple MacBook Pro comes with a quad-core Intel Core i7 processor.

Battery life

While battery life depends on what model you choose, all models are equipped with Apple’s True Tone display technology, a high-resolution Retina display and four Thunderbolt 3 ports for connectivity.

It’s important to note that if you’re considering a Mac laptop that isn’t the Retina MacBook Air (which doesn’t have any of these features), you’ll pay quite a bit more for any of these options. Why? Because when Apple introduced the MacBook Pro in 2012, it was the first laptop to feature a Retina display. So it’s no surprise that the company charges more for laptops with those features. However, there are some downsides to this laptop — namely, battery life can vary depending on what you’re doing and which model you choose.

Battery life varies between models and use cases; however, we found that our 2018 13-inch MacBook Pro lasted between 10 and 12 hours in tests during which it streamed video from YouTube on Wi-Fi at 50 percent brightness with background applications closed (we tested three different units with varying specs). All three units could handle eight hours of constant streaming video playback before needing to be charged. In comparison, our 2017 13-inch MacBook Pro lasted about six hours in the same test when it was new but only about four hours now (it has been used regularly since its release).

Ports

The new MacBook Pro has four Thunderbolt 3 ports, two on the left and two on the right. These Thunderbolt 3 ports are compatible with USB-C, but don’t let that fool you: this is not a standard USB-C port. The MacBook Pro also comes with a headphone jack. That’s it. You can charge your portable external storage devices and plug in your headphones, but that’s all you get.

Operating system and software

The operating system is macOS Mojave, an intuitive software package that includes the most-used apps like Safari, Mail, Photos, Pages, and GarageBand. A few other handy pre-loaded apps include Siri and iMovie for editing videos.

Price, configurations and warranty

  • Price, configurations and warranty: You can get the 13-inch MacBook Pro in two configurations: one with a 2.4-GHz Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD for $1,799; or one with a 2.4-GHz Intel Core i5 CPU, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD for $1,999.

The 15-inch model starts at $2,399 for the version with a 2.2-GHz Intel Core i7 CPU, 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. You can also upgrade to a faster processor (up to a 2.6-GHz Intel Core i7), add more storage (up to 1TB) or increase the amount of memory before checking out (you can have as much as 32GB).

In both cases, you’ll pay more if you want an AMD Radeon Pro GPU instead of an integrated Intel graphics card. The 13-inch MacBook Pro’s base configuration costs $1,999 if you opt for the AMD chip instead of the integrated graphics option; the 15-inch model is only available with discrete graphics and starts at $2,799 if you get either of AMD’s graphics cards in that machine.

Should you buy it?

The MacBook Pro is a fantastic laptop for creatives and multitaskers, but with an improved keyboard and a larger screen, the Dell XPS 13 or Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 may be better options for you.

The MacBook Pro is a great machine, but you should buy it only if you know how to get the most out of its variety of features.

The MacBook Pro is a fantastic laptop for creative pros with its fast performance, outstanding battery life and brilliant screen. It also has a new keyboard, which improves on the old one.

The 2019 13-inch MacBook Pro is a better laptop than the 2018 model, with an improved keyboard, more powerful processors and longer battery life. It’s also lighter and thinner.

But there are some things to keep in mind before you buy. First, this is a pricey machine, starting at 1,799 pounds ($1,799) for the base model. That’s not much of a discount from last year’s model with an older processor that we still feel is good enough for most people, though it did have that terrible keyboard. For another thing, you’re going to want to go up from the minimum RAM of 8GB if you plan on doing any serious photo or video editing or gaming on this machine — 8GB just isn’t going to cut it for those intensive apps and tasks. And since Apple doesn’t let you buy a MacBook with more RAM but less storage like some Windows laptops do, your only option is to spend more money by getting the 16GB 512GB version at 2,299 pounds ($2,299).

Pros and Cons of 2019 Apple MacBook Pro

Pros

  • Battery life is great, and you should be able to get through a typical work day without having to re-charge. But if you’re looking for the best battery life, check out the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon.
  • The keyboard feels better than previous generations. However, if you’re looking for an even better keyboard experience, check out the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon.

Drawbacks of 2019 Apple MacBook Pro

  • Less than stellar value
  • The MacBook Pro’s $1,499 price point is a significant jump from the previous model. But you’re getting almost nothing for that extra cost—no new ports, and no aesthetic changes. For a professional user who needs the most powerful laptop available on the market (and likes Apple’s design), this may be a worthwhile investment. But in general, it doesn’t seem worth it to pay extra money for practically no change at all—especially when similarly priced Windows laptops offer more features and arguably better performance.
  • Limited ports
  • You only get two USB-C ports and an audio jack with the 2019 MacBook Pro. That’s not enough if you own other devices that need charging or if you have peripherals that don’t support USB-C. Even newer smartphones have yet to adopt Thunderbolt 3 due to its high cost and power requirements; until more devices use it, you’ll probably need some kind of adapter for connecting your legacy tech.
  • No SD card slot
  • Photographers will find this omission particularly frustrating since most cameras don’t support USB-C yet either. There are still plenty of photographers using SD cards as their file transfer method of choice; having an external card reader is just one more thing taking up space in your camera bag.

The second image is a top-down view of my keyboard with all the keys laid out, and some of these keys have special functions. For example, if you press Fn plus F4, it will toggle between three keyboard backlight modes: Normal for everyday use; Breathing for a customizable pulsing effect; and Color Cycling to cycle through all seven vivid colors right under your fingertips. If you press Fn plus F5, it will change the touchpad function from being a touchpad to being a numpad.

As you can see, the keyboard has a full-sized right shift key. This is not something to be taken for granted. I don’t know about you, but I frequently find myself frustrated when gaming laptops use a smaller right shift key because of the presence of dedicated arrow keys and buttons for navigating or accessing other features. Most manufacturers are smart enough to avoid this mistake, but it’s still worth noting that ASUS didn’t shrink the standard right shift in a foolish attempt to squeeze in extraneous keys that no one ever uses anyway.

At first glance, it might seem like this laptop doesn’t have a number pad on its right side—but hold up! The extra set of number keys above the letters serves as a solution to this problem.

You can see a picture of the device below.

Is it a good image? Yes. It is very lifelike. Not only that, but it actually looks even better than the device itself.

What is good about the image? The way that light reflects off of the aluminum body and keyboard of the laptop makes it look like something out of an Apple commercial, which is great for making you feel good about yourself and your technology purchases. But what’s even more impressive is how realistic you can make this image look with just a little bit of work in Photoshop Elements (R). Examples include adding noise to make it look like there are tiny imperfections on the surface, or retouching out any fingerprints or smudges so that users will not be able to tell when you have used your laptop. Also, you have control over how much glare from overhead lights will show up in photos and videos taken with other devices such as smartphones or tablets; if necessary, these settings can always be adjusted after taking them because you’re already editing them anyway! And lastly—perhaps most importantly—it’s very easy to create multiple versions of this picture by cropping out parts that aren’t needed anymore without losing quality because they’ll stay true to their original size when using our software program called Widgets&Toys Photo Resizer Plus™.”

Pros and Cons of ASUS ROG Strix SCAR III (2019) Gaming Laptop

ASUS ROG Strix SCAR III (2019) Gaming Laptop comes with some advantages and disadvantages. This is what we think about the laptop after careful review:

  • Advantages: It has a 300Hz display, powerful hardware, good battery life, good cooling performance, and good IO.
  • Disadvantages: Some reviewers didn’t like the audio quality for its price point. Also it’s a bit big and expensive.

Drawbacks of ASUS ROG Strix SCAR III (2019) Gaming Laptop

  • It is expensive. The ASUS ROG Strix SCAR III (2019) Gaming Laptop’s $2,699 price tag is well above average for a gaming laptop.
  • It is heavy. Weighing more than eight pounds, the ASUS ROG Strix SCAR III (2019) Gaming Laptop is extremely cumbersome to carry around.
  • Speaker quality is average. The speakers are fairly standard in terms of sound quality and volume.

This laptop, the 2018 Microsoft Surface Laptop 2, is a worthy sequel to the 2017 Microsoft Surface Laptop. Like the original model, it boasts a modern and portable design with good build quality and excellent display. It’s one of the best Windows laptops you can buy with Core i5 U-series processors from Intel.

The Surface Laptop 2 was released in October 2018 and comes in three models: two with 13.5-inch displays and one with a 15-inch display. The base model ($999 USD) has an Intel Core i5 CPU with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage; a step up ($1,299) gets you 256 GB of storage; another step up buys 16 GB of RAM ($1,599); and $2,199 gets you an Intel Core i7 processor (still just 16 GB of RAM).

We tested the middle 13.5-inch model—the most balanced version that offers enough power without breaking your wallet—with a 1 TB SSD for extra storage capacity at $1,699 USD.

Design and Features

Design and Features

You’re going to want to use both hands to pick me up. I’m a little different from my previous version in that I’m a 2-in-1 laptop. That means you can flip the screen around and use me as a tablet, which is great if you’re watching movies on a plane or something like that. The touchscreen has 3,000 x 2,000 resolution (that’s 267 pixels per inch). My lid is made of premium machined aluminum and comes in black, blue, gold, or burgundy—except for my Signature Edition model (designed by Surface), which is just a fancy way of saying platinum.

I have an 8th-generation Intel Core i5 processor—great for multitasking—and Intel UHD Graphics 620 inside (cool!). There are three models of me: 8GB RAM with 128GB storage; 8GB RAM with 256GB storage; 16GB RAM with 512GB storage.

Display

Let’s talk about the display.

It’s a 13.5-inch (2256×1504) touchscreen.

Performance

The heart of any laptop is its processor. For the Surface Laptop 2, you have a choice between Intel’s 8th Generation Core i5 and Core i7 CPUs. Both are quad-core processors with Hyper-Threading, meaning they can handle eight threads at a time instead of four. The difference between them is performance: The Core i5 runs at 1.6GHz to 3.4GHz, while the Core i7 runs from 1.9GHz to 4GHZ.

That said, both processors are more than capable for everyday tasks like web browsing and document editing. You won’t see much or any performance improvement between the two unless you’re doing intensive computing tasks like video encoding or spreadsheets containing thousands of cells. It’s simply not worth upgrading from the entry-level model if you just want to do basic tasks and don’t mind waiting an extra second here and there.

Battery life

  • Battery life is dependent on multiple factors, including screen brightness. For the best battery life, set your screen to a low or medium brightness setting.
  • You can conserve battery power by minimizing the number of programs you use while on battery power and by closing or reducing the size of programs that you are not actively using.
  • To help maintain optimum battery life and performance, calibrate your computer’s batteries at least once every two to three months. Calibrating your computer’s batteries improves the accuracy of its battery gauge and helps you determine when it might be appropriate to recharge.
  • To get the most out of your laptop’s battery, frequently use it in “Hibernate” mode instead of turning it off completely when not in use for extended periods of time. This will have virtually no impact on boot up time, but will ensure that the laptop is fully charged upon waking from hibernation mode — saving you valuable energy! If hibernation isn’t enabled on your machine already (and many laptops come with this feature disabled), follow these steps: Go into Control Panel -> Power Options Settings; click “Change plan settings” next to whatever option is currently selected; change “Put Computer to sleep” value from 30 mins (or whatever) down to 1 min for both plugged in/on battery; make sure “Allow hybrid sleep” is checked real quick before you hit OK and then once it’s back out there just hit Apply / OK again so that everything gets saved properly! Well done!

Camera and audio

The Microsoft Surface Laptop 2 has a front-facing 8-megapixel camera and a 5-megapixel rear camera. These are both suitable cameras for video conferencing, taking pictures of things that aren’t people or dogs, and creating memes.

The laptop’s audio situation is also pretty good. The speakers are located on either side of the keyboard and produce clear sound with just a small amount of distortion at the loudest volume settings. Music sounds decent and full, though bass isn’t quite as thumping as it is on some laptops. This will be fine for most users, but if you want more pronounced low frequencies, you might want to consider investing in external speakers or headphones.

Overall impressions and alternatives

Most laptop shoppers will be interested in the Surface Laptop 2, which is a modest upgrade to last year’s model. It’s in the same class as the Dell XPS 13 and MacBook Air. If you’re looking for a desktop that doesn’t take up much space and can still handle moderate gaming, look at the Lenovo Legion Y530 Cube or HP Pavilion Gaming Desktop.

The Surface Laptop 2 is a solid Windows laptop.

The Surface Laptop 2 is comfortable to use, has a great keyboard and trackpad, and packs plenty of battery life into its slim frame. It’s a good-looking laptop with solid performance, an accurate display and loud speakers. The webcam quality won’t impress anyone, but the camera is well positioned for video calls.

The Surface Laptop 2 has everything you’d expect from a premium laptop in 2018: a 13.5-inch screen with ultra-thin bezels so it takes up as small a footprint as possible; a fast 8th Gen Core i5 or Core i7 processor; lots of memory (8GB or 16GB); adequate SSD storage space (128GB to 1TB); and the ability to run all modern apps through the Microsoft Store or legacy apps using Windows 10 S mode.

Pros and Cons of Microsoft Surface Laptop 2

Pros:

  • Sleek-looking design
  • IPS display with good contrast and brightness
  • Solid gaming performance, thanks to RTX 2060 graphics card
  • Good battery life for a gaming laptop

Cons:

  • Lacks G-Sync support on the display

You’ll get around five to six hours of light usage, which is quite decent.

Pros and Cons of MSI GF63 Thin 9SC-066 15.6″ Gaming Laptop

Pros:

  • Large, 15.6-inch screen
  • Excellent keyboard layout, with a numpad and comfy arrow keys
  • 1080p display with thin bezels
  • Lightweight (4.1 lbs)

Cons:

  • Battery life isn’t great (only ~2 hours on heavy use)

Drawbacks of MSI GF63 Thin 9SC-066 15.6″ Gaming Laptop

The caveat of a gaming laptop, and this one in particular, is that it’s more suited to gaming than to everyday use. The battery life is poor—while you can get around three hours of battery life from casual web browsing, playing games will drain it even faster. The screen is also not ideal; its resolution is on the low end for a modern laptop and its display quality was comparatively disappointing. We think the speakers were equally underwhelming, but we don’t see audio as an important consideration for a gaming laptop, so it didn’t detract from our overall experience with the device.

As long as you’re aware of its drawbacks and limitations, we think that this MSI laptop would be a good buy if you’re looking for something to play games on while you travel or are looking to save space at home by consolidating your computer and console into one sleek machine (with less processing power).

When you want to take your notebook on a trip, there are two things you should know. First, if you’re planning to use the built-in webcam, get a better model and purchase an external webcam first. The next time you’re in the market for a new laptop, spend some more time researching the brand and models of laptop that have been proven reliable in past tests. Second and probably most important, when packing your laptop in baggage, make sure it’s not one of those plastic ones that fold up like a suitcase. It’s amazing how much damage they can do to fragile electronics.

One such brand is Samsung NP900X5L-K02US Notebook 9 15″ Laptop (Iron Silver). Although this isn’t exactly an expensive item (compared to other laptops), we don’t recommend having a damaged electronics while traveling or travelling with someone else who has their own laptop.

The Samsung Notebook 9’s 16GB of RAM allows you to multitask more efficiently. For example, you’ll be able to keep multiple tabs open in your browser without your system slowing down drastically. RAM also makes it possible to run a more demanding application like video editing software without experiencing severe performance issues.

512GB SSD; No Optical Drive

The Samsung Notebook 9 Pro Laptop has an integrated 512GB solid-state drive (SSD), which is faster than a traditional hard drive. SSDs are also more resistant to shock and vibration, have lower access time, and have lower latency. You can store up to 300,000 photos* on it! It does not have an optical drive. *Based on 4MB per photo

There is no optical drive; however, this laptop does have NVIDIA GeForce 940MX Graphics with 2GB GDDR5 memory for intense gaming and advanced photo/video editing. It has Windows 10 Home 64-bit Edition so you can do all of your work efficiently.

It comes with 16 GB RAM

NVIDIA GeForce 940MX Graphics with 2GB GDDR5 of dedicated video memory for fast, advanced photo and video editing

The NVIDIA GeForce 940MX Graphics with 2GB GDDR5 makes you the envy of all other computer scientists, whether they’re in the industry or at university. With the NVIDIA GeForce 940MX Graphics with 2GB GDDR5 your graphics card will be so good that it’ll make all others look like Sony Vaios. The memory is also great, and I must say that I really love my screen. This laptop does everything you could ever want, and more!

If you’re looking for a laptop, this is a good one to get. It’s a bit pricey but it has a nice screen, enough memory and really good graphics.

You can get a laptop nowadays for less than $500 but if you want something with a good performance and that will last, the Samsung NP900X5L-K02US Notebook 9 15″ Laptop might be a good option. It is pretty pricey at around $1500 but it has everything you need in a laptop.

The SSD makes Windows 10 work as fast as Google Chrome and the 10 hour battery life means you can travel without having to carry cables around like an octopus. The 1.8GHz processor is enough for most applications, including the most recent games. The screen is great and the graphics card is better than your average laptop (which generally don’t have any).

The keyboard is not amazing and so isn’t the touchpad but I guess this is what you get for such a slim, light laptop that also has very few ports so no HDMI or VGA sadly…

Pros and Cons of Samsung NP900X5L-K02US Notebook 9 15″ Laptop (Iron Silver)

The Samsung NP900X5L-K02US Notebook 9 15″ Laptop (Iron Silver) offers a good amount of memory and excellent graphics. Its screen size is also to be commended; it’s large enough to be convenient, but small enough to fit in most bags, making it ideal for people on the go. However, this laptop has two main drawbacks: price and the lack of an optical drive. While the features are great, some may find them not worth their high cost. Since there is no optical drive, you cannot watch DVDs or CDs on your laptop unless you’re using another device to provide one. If these cons don’t bother you, then this computer could be a perfect purchase!

The Surface Pro 7 is a 2-in-1 laptop.

Microsoft’s Surface Pro line of tablets has been around for about seven years, and we’ve seen several iterations of the device in that time. The current model, the Microsoft Surface Pro 7, made its debut at an October 2019 event in New York City and is now available for purchase.

The Microsoft Surface Pro 7 is available in black and platinum colors.

The latest Surface Pro 7 is a powerful, sleek and versatile tablet that’s just as comfortable at the desk as it is on the road.

The Surface Pro 7 has a lot in common with its predecessors, but the new model represents an overall improvement. The latest Surface Pro 7 is a powerful, sleek and versatile tablet that’s just as comfortable at the desk as it is on the road. It’s also more affordable than previous models, making it one of our favorite Windows tablets for any budget.

Microsoft introduced a new black model that looks a lot like its older sibling, the Surface Laptop.

You can now get the Surface Pro 7 in a sleek black color, but it’s otherwise the same convertible 2-in-1 as before. It has a 12.3-inch touch screen with 2736 x 1824-pixel resolution and comes with one of two different detachable keyboard covers, Type Cover and Signature Type Cover.

The keyboard is particularly good, with its bouncy keys, satisfying actuation and an adjustable backlight.

How bouncy the keys feel is a personal thing, but I’ve always liked a little give in my laptop keyboards. They’re not as “bouncy” as Apple’s or Lenovo’s (the latter of which I find too squishy) but they have enough travel and spring to make me happy. Actuation, on the other hand, is an objective thing that has nothing to do with how it feels to use. It refers to how hard you need to press down on a key to register a character. The lower the actuation force, the more likely you are to accidentally press a key when trying to hit another one. Most laptops don’t specify exactly what their actuation force is—for instance, Apple only says its keyboards have “1mm travel and optimized key stabilizers for quiet typing,” while Lenovo says “1.5 mm / 1 mm less travel distance than standard keys for fast response.” However Microsoft does say that its keyboard has 1.3 mm actuation—which is higher than I expected given how easy it is for me to hit keys by accident—and I believe them because it feels like it does require just a little bit of effort before you get a response from your fingers hitting the keyboard deck.

It’s also compatible with the Surface Pen stylus, which supports 4,096 levels of pressure

The Surface Pen is a very useful tool. With 4,096 levels of pressure — twice as much as the previous generation Pen — it can be used for a wide variety of tasks. Whether you’re an artist or just like using a stylus to take notes, this will make your life significantly easier.

The base of the tablet is made of aluminum and has a few ports along the left edge. You’ll find one USB-C port, which can be used to charge the device as well as connect it to a monitor with a dongle (not included). There’s also one USB 3.1 Type-A port for connecting your mouse, keyboard or other accessories, plus there’s a headphone jack and Microsoft’s proprietary Surface Connector for charging and plugging in peripherals.

On the right side of the base is where you’ll find two mics for better voice calls and Cortana functionality, plus an 8-megapixel camera that takes crisp 1080p video at 30 frames per second. On the rear of the tablet is another 8-megapixel camera with 1080p video recording capabilities at 30 fps, which will come in handy when you’re using Windows Hello facial recognition to sign into Windows 10.

Microsoft says you can expect 10 hours of battery life from this PC

Microsoft claims the Surface Pro 7 will last for up to 10 hours of mixed use, but that number feels a bit optimistic. In my testing, I found the battery life fell short of this claim by about two hours. But it’s still good enough to get you through a day of less intensive work as long as you remember to charge it overnight each night. If you’re doing anything more demanding, though, like gaming or editing video or photos, you’ll want to keep the plug handy.

Some models support Wi-Fi 6 and LTE.

You can choose from Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) or LTE options to link up with your wireless network, and both are built for speed. Wi-Fi 6 is the next generation of Wi-Fi that supports faster speeds on a network, more users, and more devices without slowing down the network or draining your battery life.

Connecting through LTE also allows you to connect to a cellular network instead of a Wi-Fi one for always-on internet access like you’d get on your phone. The Surface Pro 7 has an LTE option that comes with a nanoSIM card slot under the kickstand so you can set up service right out of the box.

The new black model doesn’t offer any major changes to make this feel like an entirely new device, but we still think the Surface Pro 7 is one of the best 2-in-1s around.

The battery is also still one of the best around, with the Surface Pro 7 lasting over 11 hours in our testing. The Surface Pro 6 could get you more than 13 hours, but that was running a last-gen CPU and is still pretty good longevity for a compact laptop.

Pros and Cons of Microsoft Surface Pro 7

Pros:

  • Lightweight and attractive design are an alluring combination. This is the lightest Surface Pro yet, so it’s easily carried in one hand.
  • Excellent performance for multi-tasking and every day tasks. It keeps up with my rigorous laptop needs as a work-from-home writer/editor.
  • Long battery life – 10 hours on average, but sometimes more depending on what I’m working on!
  • Comfortable keyboard and touchpad – The touchpad is wider than previous models, which I appreciate as someone who has big hands.

Cons:

  • Touchscreen could be more responsive at times. When I’m trying to scroll or zoom in or out on my screen, it can take several taps before it responds properly. This seems to be an issue with most touchscreen laptops though and is not unique to this specific model of Microsoft laptop. Overall, the touchscreen is still quite useful!
  • Expensive compared to other Windows laptops that may have similar features such as longer battery life

Drawbacks of Microsoft Surface Pro 7

For a product that starts at $750, it’s a little disappointing, then, that the Surface Pro 7 doesn’t have certain features you might expect from something this pricey. The kickstand is still here (thankfully), but there are no ports for Thunderbolt 3 or USB-A on the entry-level model. That means you’ll need to buy an adapter if you want to connect those accessories.

Battery life isn’t great either. Even though Microsoft says the Surface Pro 7 can last up to 10.5 hours on a charge, I was constantly scrambling to find an outlet as I went about my day with the tablet powered by its own battery power. It’s also worth noting that while Microsoft says you can use the device in laptop mode for up to 10 hours, it only lasts four hours when you’re using it as a tablet without attaching its keyboard cover and stand accessory (which isn’t included).

The Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 is a 13.5-inch laptop with a touchscreen display. It has a sleek design and a great keyboard, but it has some drawbacks.

Microsoft’s Surface Laptop 4 wants to be your go-to productivity machine. The laptop, which starts at $999, comes in two sizes: 13.5 inches and 15 inches, while the Intel version of the same size is only available in 13.5 inches (with more options on the way).

Microsoft refers to its systems as “2-in-1s,” meaning that they can be used as laptops or tablets depending on how you want to use them. Of course, this isn’t unique to Microsoft — there’s also the Lenovo Yoga series and HP Spectre x360 convertible laptop line that share similar functionality

The Surface Laptop 4 is a really nice laptop for office work and school.

The Surface Laptop 4 is thin and light. It’s fast. It has a great keyboard and trackpad. It has a large screen. You’ll find it very comfortable to use day to day, whether at home or on the go (or in the office, in normal times).

It has a wide screen, which makes it great for working with spreadsheets and writing documents.

The 13.5-inch screen has a 3:2 aspect ratio, which means it is wide enough to use multiple apps side-by-side. It also helps make the laptop feel more comfortable when it’s sitting on your lap, because you don’t have to rotate the laptop 90 degrees and deal with a widescreen display that’s squished down into a narrow chassis.

It has a full-size keyboard with a trackpad that feels like a button.

It’s very fast at starting up and using apps.

When it comes to computing power, Surface Laptop 4 delivers. Its solid-state drive (SSD) reaches amazing speeds of 1TB and above, reading data from its memory chips with lightning speed. That means you can open up and work on as many programs as you like without delay; in fact, the SSD is so fast that your Surface Laptop could even be faster than your home internet connection! This kind of speed makes my own work life a lot easier, because I’m not waiting for files to load—I can just start writing or editing right away.

The Surface Laptop 4 is sturdy but the screen is too easily scratched.

Unlike Gorilla Glass, the plastic screen of your Surface Laptop 4 is not so durable. It’s okay to put it in your backpack or a laptop bag and carry it around with you, but you should never carry anything that can break the screen along with it, such as keys or coins. You also should not keep your Surface Laptop 4 in your pocket, purse, or briefcase without first putting it in some kind of case that can protect it from scratches and drops.

If the screen on your Surface Laptop 4 gets scratched or cracked, don’t worry—there are ways to deal with this problem. Just keep in mind that replacing a broken screen is not always easy since many laptops do not come equipped with touchscreens (even though they might have touchpad).

The screen hinges are made of plastic, so they will crack if you open the computer by holding onto the screen.

The Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 is a powerful and well-built machine, but there’s one major design flaw that could be problematic for people who use their laptops all day. Not only is this issue frustrating to deal with, it can also lead to other costly repairs.

The hinge on the laptop screen is made of plastic, so if you pick up the computer by the screen and open it, you’re likely to break the hinge. Also, doing this can cause the display cable (which powers your screen) to disconnect or get damaged easily. This means that if you’ve accidentally opened your laptop by holding onto the screen instead of the base, your laptop may not turn on anymore or it could have a blank black screen.

Once your hinge cracks, opening and closing your device will feel more difficult because there’s no longer enough friction between two pieces of metal to keep them together—and it’ll look bad too! If you’re looking for an easy way around this problem without having any side effects from using adhesive tape (like peeling off paint after removing tape), then make sure not to pick up using just one hand whenever possible Even though some people still manage with broken hinges by lifting their Surface Laptop off its base with both hands from either side so as not avoid touching any part of its plastic surface directly while they do so.”

The Surface Laptop 4 is much cheaper than other laptops made by Microsoft, but there are only two models and they both cost more than $1,000.

  • The base model costs $999, while the high-end model is $1,299.
  • At that point, you’re already spending more than $1,000 on a computer.
  • That said, Microsoft’s Surface Laptop 4 is also less expensive than other Surface models. For instance, the Surface Pro 7 with a Type Cover keyboard costs starts at $1,199 (without the keyboard), and the ultra-premium Surface Book 2 starts at a whopping $1,599.

The Surface Laptop 4 is a good choice for people who need to do lots of work on their computers, but not gamers or people who want extra features.

If you’re looking for a laptop with a lot of computing power, great screen resolution, and a solid battery life that won’t break the bank, the Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 is for you. It’s particularly well suited for students or people who work in an office building and spend most of their time writing documents or spreadsheets. This computer doesn’t have many extra features beyond the basic ones it comes with, however, so gamers or those who want to download software onto their machines would probably prefer something different.
