The new keyboard design replaces the much maligned butterfly keyboard with a new mechanism called Magic Keyboard. Battery life varies between models and use cases; however, we found that our 2018 13-inch MacBook Pro lasted between 10 and 12 hours in tests during which it streamed video from YouTube on Wi-Fi at 50 percent brightness with background applications closed (we tested three different units with varying specs). All three units could handle eight hours of constant streaming video playback before needing to be charged. In comparison, our 2017 13-inch MacBook Pro lasted about six hours in the same test when it was new but only about four hours now (it has been used regularly since its release).

But there are some things to keep in mind before you buy. First, this is a pricey machine, starting at 1,799 pounds ($1,799) for the base model. That’s not much of a discount from last year’s model with an older processor that we still feel is good enough for most people, though it did have that terrible keyboard. For another thing, you’re going to want to go up from the minimum RAM of 8GB if you plan on doing any serious photo or video editing or gaming on this machine — 8GB just isn’t going to cut it for those intensive apps and tasks. And since Apple doesn’t let you buy a MacBook with more RAM but less storage like some Windows laptops do, your only option is to spend more money by getting the 16GB 512GB version at 2,299 pounds ($2,299).

But in general, it doesn’t seem worth it to pay extra money for practically no change at all—especially when similarly priced Windows laptops offer more features and arguably better performance.

- You only get two USB-C ports and an audio jack with the 2019 MacBook Pro. That’s not enough if you own other devices that need charging or if you have peripherals that don’t support USB-C. Even newer smartphones have yet to adopt Thunderbolt 3 due to its high cost and power requirements; until more devices use it, you’ll probably need some kind of adapter for connecting your legacy tech.

- Photographers will find this omission particularly frustrating since most cameras don’t support USB-C yet either. As you can see, the keyboard has a full-sized right shift key. This is not something to be taken for granted. I don’t know about you, but I frequently find myself frustrated when gaming laptops use a smaller right shift key because of the presence of dedicated arrow keys and buttons for navigating or accessing other features. Most manufacturers are smart enough to avoid this mistake, but it’s still worth noting that ASUS didn’t shrink the standard right shift in a foolish attempt to squeeze in extraneous keys that no one ever uses anyway.

This laptop, the 2018 Microsoft Surface Laptop 2, is a worthy sequel to the 2017 Microsoft Surface Laptop. Like the original model, it boasts a modern and portable design with good build quality and excellent display. It’s one of the best Windows laptops you can buy with Core i5 U-series processors from Intel.
The Surface Laptop 2 was released in October 2018 and comes in three models: two with 13.5-inch displays and one with a 15-inch display. The base model ($999 USD) has an Intel Core i5 CPU with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage; a step up ($1,299) gets you 256 GB of storage; another step up buys 16 GB of RAM ($1,599); and $2,199 gets you an Intel Core i7 processor (still just 16 GB of RAM).
We tested the middle 13.5-inch model—the most balanced version that offers enough power without breaking your wallet—with a 1 TB SSD for extra storage capacity at $1,699 USD.
Design and Features
Design and Features
You’re going to want to use both hands to pick me up. I’m a little different from my previous version in that I’m a 2-in-1 laptop. That means you can flip the screen around and use me as a tablet, which is great if you’re watching movies on a plane or something like that. The touchscreen has 3,000 x 2,000 resolution (that’s 267 pixels per inch). My lid is made of premium machined aluminum and comes in black, blue, gold, or burgundy—except for my Signature Edition model (designed by Surface), which is just a fancy way of saying platinum.
I have an 8th-generation Intel Core i5 processor—great for multitasking—and Intel UHD Graphics 620 inside (cool!). There are three models of me: 8GB RAM with 128GB storage; 8GB RAM with 256GB storage; 16GB RAM with 512GB storage.
Display
Let’s talk about the display.
It’s a 13.5-inch (2256×1504) touchscreen.
Performance
The heart of any laptop is its processor. For the Surface Laptop 2, you have a choice between Intel’s 8th Generation Core i5 and Core i7 CPUs. Both are quad-core processors with Hyper-Threading, meaning they can handle eight threads at a time instead of four. The difference between them is performance: The Core i5 runs at 1.6GHz to 3.4GHz, while the Core i7 runs from 1.9GHz to 4GHZ.
That said, both processors are more than capable for everyday tasks like web browsing and document editing. You won’t see much or any performance improvement between the two unless you’re doing intensive computing tasks like video encoding or spreadsheets containing thousands of cells. It’s simply not worth upgrading from the entry-level model if you just want to do basic tasks and don’t mind waiting an extra second here and there.
Battery life
- Battery life is dependent on multiple factors, including screen brightness. For the best battery life, set your screen to a low or medium brightness setting.
- You can conserve battery power by minimizing the number of programs you use while on battery power and by closing or reducing the size of programs that you are not actively using.
- To help maintain optimum battery life and performance, calibrate your computer’s batteries at least once every two to three months. Calibrating your computer’s batteries improves the accuracy of its battery gauge and helps you determine when it might be appropriate to recharge.
- To get the most out of your laptop’s battery, frequently use it in “Hibernate” mode instead of turning it off completely when not in use for extended periods of time. This will have virtually no impact on boot up time, but will ensure that the laptop is fully charged upon waking from hibernation mode — saving you valuable energy! If hibernation isn’t enabled on your machine already (and many laptops come with this feature disabled), follow these steps: Go into Control Panel -> Power Options Settings; click “Change plan settings” next to whatever option is currently selected; change “Put Computer to sleep” value from 30 mins (or whatever) down to 1 min for both plugged in/on battery; make sure “Allow hybrid sleep” is checked real quick before you hit OK and then once it’s back out there just hit Apply / OK again so that everything gets saved properly! Well done!
Camera and audio
The Microsoft Surface Laptop 2 has a front-facing 8-megapixel camera and a 5-megapixel rear camera. These are both suitable cameras for video conferencing, taking pictures of things that aren’t people or dogs, and creating memes.
The laptop’s audio situation is also pretty good. The speakers are located on either side of the keyboard and produce clear sound with just a small amount of distortion at the loudest volume settings. Music sounds decent and full, though bass isn’t quite as thumping as it is on some laptops. This will be fine for most users, but if you want more pronounced low frequencies, you might want to consider investing in external speakers or headphones.
Overall impressions and alternatives
Most laptop shoppers will be interested in the Surface Laptop 2, which is a modest upgrade to last year’s model. It’s in the same class as the Dell XPS 13 and MacBook Air. If you’re looking for a desktop that doesn’t take up much space and can still handle moderate gaming, look at the Lenovo Legion Y530 Cube or HP Pavilion Gaming Desktop.
The Surface Laptop 2 is a solid Windows laptop.
The Surface Laptop 2 is comfortable to use, has a great keyboard and trackpad, and packs plenty of battery life into its slim frame. It’s a good-looking laptop with solid performance, an accurate display and loud speakers. The webcam quality won’t impress anyone, but the camera is well positioned for video calls.
The Surface Laptop 2 has everything you’d expect from a premium laptop in 2018: a 13.5-inch screen with ultra-thin bezels so it takes up as small a footprint as possible; a fast 8th Gen Core i5 or Core i7 processor; lots of memory (8GB or 16GB); adequate SSD storage space (128GB to 1TB); and the ability to run all modern apps through the Microsoft Store or legacy apps using Windows 10 S mode.

The caveat of a gaming laptop, and this one in particular, is that it’s more suited to gaming than to everyday use. The battery life is poor—while you can get around three hours of battery life from casual web browsing, playing games will drain it even faster. The screen is also not ideal; its resolution is on the low end for a modern laptop and its display quality was comparatively disappointing. We think the speakers were equally underwhelming, but we don’t see audio as an important consideration for a gaming laptop, so it didn’t detract from our overall experience with the device.
As long as you’re aware of its drawbacks and limitations, we think that this MSI laptop would be a good buy if you’re looking for something to play games on while you travel or are looking to save space at home by consolidating your computer and console into one sleek machine (with less processing power).

The 1.8GHz processor is enough for most applications, including the most recent games. The screen is great and the graphics card is better than your average laptop (which generally don’t have any).

- Touchscreen could be more responsive at times. When I’m trying to scroll or zoom in or out on my screen, it can take several taps before it responds properly. This seems to be an issue with most touchscreen laptops though and is not unique to this specific model of Microsoft laptop. Overall, the touchscreen is still quite useful!

Drawbacks of Microsoft Surface Pro 7
For a product that starts at $750, it’s a little disappointing, then, that the Surface Pro 7 doesn’t have certain features you might expect from something this pricey. The kickstand is still here (thankfully), but there are no ports for Thunderbolt 3 or USB-A on the entry-level model. That means you’ll need to buy an adapter if you want to connect those accessories.
Battery life isn’t great either. Even though Microsoft says the Surface Pro 7 can last up to 10.5 hours on a charge, I was constantly scrambling to find an outlet as I went about my day with the tablet powered by its own battery power. It’s also worth noting that while Microsoft says you can use the device in laptop mode for up to 10 hours, it only lasts four hours when you’re using it as a tablet without attaching its keyboard cover and stand accessory (which isn’t included).
